The AMX “Ghibli” single-engine ground attack aircraft is the result of collaboration between the Italian and Brazilian aeronautical industries. The project was launched in the 1980s to replace aging Fiat G-91Y fighter-bombers in the Italian Air Force. The Brazilian Air Force had to replace its MB-326s. The AMX has a high swept wing and its Rolls-Royce Spey 807 engine allows it to reach a maximum speed of 1,000 km/h. It is armed, in the Italian version, with a 20mm M61 Vulcan cannon and can carry an offensive load of 3,800 kg. The two-seater AMX-T version is an advanced training aircraft, however capable of carrying out ground attack and close support missions. The Italian Air Force purchased 26 copies.
