Like the F-35A (61124) with conventional takeoff and landing, the F-35B comes from the Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program, an ambitious concept which aimed to replace with a single aircraft various types in service in the three branches of the forces American armies: a stealthy and hyper-connected fifth-generation fighter. The F-35B shares 70% of the design of the F-35A from which it differs mainly by its mode of propulsion with a counter-rotating fan 1.3m in diameter located behind the cockpit and driven by a shaft engaged on the reactor turbine. Powered by air taken from the reactor, a nozzle under each wing controls roll and provides additional lift. The reactor nozzle can rotate from 0 degrees (horizontal thrust) to 95 degrees down (5 degrees forward). It is oriented diagonally for short takeoffs and vertically for vertical landings and hovering. The F-35B can carry up to 454kg in each of the two fuselage weapons bays. Six under-wing hardpoints can be used for other armaments. When all six are used, it is called a “Beast Mode” configuration.
