Type 300 prototype flew for the first time on 5 March 1936 and the first deliveries of the Spitfire Mk I unit, powered by a Merlin II 12-cylinder water-cooled V, developing 1030 horsepower and 8 guns, took place in August 1938.In total, 21 554 Siptfires were built in 24 different versions.
