Between the two world wars, several navies launched programs for fast torpedo boats capable of carrying out patrol and attack missions. Compared to those of the First World War, the new engines made it possible to improve the performance, reliability and efficiency of this type of combat boat. During the 1930s, the German Kriegsmarine developed the S-class torpedo boats. The S-26 series built between 1939 and 1940 was characterized by a forecastle incorporating two 533mm torpedo tubes. The hydrodynamic characteristics of its bow were retained and improved in subsequent versions. The S-38 is one of the most famous versions of the Schnellboot, with almost 100 units produced. It was 35 meters long and had a displacement of more than 100 tonnes when fully loaded. With its 12-cylinder Daimler Benz engines, it could reach a maximum speed of 39.5 knots.
